Hi and welcome to Filton College!
Congratulations, you have made the exciting decision to come and study at our College. Let’s try and make this year as interesting, fun and memorable as possible.
We, Nathalie, Helen and John, from the Student Union will do our best to provide you with loads of Xtra activities (subject to availability) – for free! Have a look through this brochure: it will give you an idea of what’s on offer.
Take your pick: whatever your passion, there will be something to suit you!
Universities and employers are interested in seeing whether applicants can show evidence of wider interests, leadership skills and enthusiasm before deciding to offer a place. So we strongly encourage you to get involved in some of our enrichment activities alongside your main course. Our enrichment programme will increase your enjoyment of your studies and equip you for further success.

We will announce when and where the activities will take place closer to the time.
How to enrol?
You can either email us direct: enrichment@filton.ac.uk. Or you can use the sign up sheet inside this booklet and hand it in to the Student Union Office at Main site (within the Refectory) or at Learner Services (G32) at WISE. We will also have an Enrichment stall on Fresher’s Fair: 15 September at Main site and 17 September at WISE. Come and find out what’s going on!
Healthy Eating - are you living in student accommodation, living away from home? This programme will help you with some useful tips on planning weekly menus, a balanced diet, shopping, understanding food labels, cooking,…
Pilates - one of the safest forms of exercise, designed to elongate, strengthen and restore the body to balance. Pilates can be beneficial for just about everyone, regardless of age and fitness level.
Aerobics - this class will offer you an opportunity to improve your general fitness, posture, coordination and much more, but most importantly have fun in a relaxed atmosphere!
Anger Management - individual and group sessions, offering active and creative methods on how to deal with anger.
Gym - join our state of the art gym at WISE for a healthy work-out.
Stop Smoking - need help to quit and stay smoke free? NHS support and advice is now available at College.
Athletics, Badminton, Table Tennis - there is something for everybody, whatever your fitness level.
Extreme Frisbee - this exciting team sport combines the rapid direction changes of basketball and the aerial passes of football. The big difference is that extreme (or ultimate) Frisbee is a non-contact sport.
First Aid - workshops with St John’s Ambulance.
Street Wise - this is a great opportunity to get fit, increase flexibility and total body conditioning. The training combines Taekwondo and Special Forces Techniques and will help to conduct yourself in a confident manor.
Karate - after a stressful morning in class, why not take up Karate for a nice spiritual, relaxing, balanced form of Martial Arts. It can also be invigorating, motivational and build up your self confidence.
Sexual Health - workshops about Sexually Transmitted Infections, contraception, relationships,… Confidential drop-in sessions with our College Sexual Health nurse.
Alcohol and Drug Awareness - workshops aiming to increase young people’s knowledge regarding a range of substances both legal and illegal. Confidential drop-in sessions and 1-2-1 support by a trained drugs worker.
Basketball - this is your opportunity to get involved with Basketball. Practice and show off your skills with a professional player, member of the Division I Bristol Academy Flyers.
Languages - Bonjour! Ola!! Want to learn French or maybe Spanish? Not just the lingo, but also the culture behind it.
5-a-side football - You can play every weekday during term time, before 5 o’clock,
on the GOALS pitches at WISE.
Band/Vocal Technique Workshop - Play an instrument? Have a great voice? Why not join together with other students to share your talents and create
something awesome?
Drama Improvisation Workshop - you’ll learn to use improvisational acting techniques to perform spontaneously. Improvisation is fun and develops communication skills, creativity and confidence.
Duke of Edinburgh Award - is a real adventure from beginning to end. You just need to be aged between 14 and 24 and realise there’s more to life than sitting on a sofa watching life pass by. You can do programmes at 3 levels, Bronze, Silver or Gold. You achieve an Award by completing a personal programme of activities in 4 sections (5 if you’re going for Gold). You’ll find yourself helping people or the community, getting fitter,
developing skills, going on an expedition and taking part in a residential activity (Gold only). But here’s the best bit – YOU get to choose what you do! Along the way you’ll pick up experiences, friends and talents that will stay with you for the rest of your life.
Filton College Magazine - Interested in journalism? Like to have a go at writing reviews of your favourite band, film or game? Want to gain skills in building a website? If you like the sound of this, then the FC Student Magazine might be right up your street. You decide the design and concept and we provide equipment and technical support.
Look Good, Feel Good - 4 week course on cleansing your skin, applying make-up, hand and foot care.
Time 4 Mums - parents group set up for young mums and mums to be under 20-yrs old.
Drawing and Painting - brush up your skills and techniques!
DJ’ing - Got a passion for dance music? Learn the art of DJ’ing with the professionals from Kayto Sound and get inside tips and tricks on getting started as a club DJ.
Sing Up - Do you love singing, but only in the shower or when you’re alone in the car? Or maybe you feel too shy to sing? Or think you can’t sing... Rubbish: everybody can sing and it’s so much fun! Sing Up is an organisation that wants to introduce singing and music to young people with little or no experience of singing activity. So, come along and bring your friends!
Sacred Places - A series of visits to a variety of sacred places, such as: stone circles,
temples, mosques and churches. This will appeal to those who wish to experience and understand the spiritual way of being human. Take the opportunity to share and enjoy the rich diversity of culture and tradition in and around Bristol.
Student Union - we need enthusiastic and outgoing people to be active within the SU team. If you want to be more involved in College life why not come and help us organise, set up and run events, both in and out of College. It’s a fantastic way to meet new people and it’s a great experience! Come and see us at the SU office, Route 38 (@ Main) or at Learner Services, G32 (@ WISE) to find out about the available Student Union roles.
Volunteering - Do you know that in the last year alone, young people have given 40,000 hours of their time to help improve our city? It’s a great way to make a positive contribution to your community. Volunteering opens up a whole range of opportunities. If you want to make a difference, we will get you in touch with Young Bristol and Vinvolved.

Debates/CU - set up and led by students, this is the activity to join if you like discussing topical issues, listening to speakers and making your views heard.
Peer Mentoring - a new buddy scheme where students can volunteer to support fellow students and gain valuable experience.
British Sign Language - learn a daily phrase in BSL during the Learn to Sign Week (5th – 11th October). By the end of the week people should be able to communicate with each other using introductory BSL signs.
Web Design - learn to create your own space on the web using up-to-date software. The only limit is your imagination!
Blender - is a do it all graphics suite that is capable of realistic rendering, 3D animation, compositing, video editing, 3D game creation and much more! If you like the sound of this, why not join the group for Blender users at Filton College?
Camera Phone Film Festival - this course will show you how to upload footage onto a computer and edit your shots, adding music, titles and special effects.
Black & Minor Ethnicities Workshops - monthly repeated workshop about identity, cultural background, …
Charity / Fundraising events - fancy organising a fundraising event for your favourite charity? Get in contact with us and we’ll give you all the support you need.
DIY Fashion - print your own design on a T-shirt, how to alter your wardrobe,... You can beat the credit crunch with this course!
Preparation Theory Driving Test - feel like you need some extra help and support to prepare yourself? Come and join this group to increase your knowledge and confidence.
