This week Filton College Rugby Academy has been named team of the month by national magazine, Rugby World. This is the first time the college has received this award, showing how far they have progressed over the past 6 years on the National School boy circuit.
Rugby World Summary:
Filton College are our second Team of the Month for season 2008-2009 thanks to the great feat of winning the St Josephs Festival for the third time in four years writes Huw S Thomas.
They followed it four days later in carrying off the Denstone 10s to end a terrific half-term of success which prior to Denstone had seen the Bristol Academy college reel off five consecutive wins and reach the 3rd round of the Daily Mail Cup.
The best win was 41-5 against Twyford HS the Wasps academy school, followed by hard fought wins over Bryanston 24-12 and Truro College 29-11.
Easy Cup victories of the Kings of Wessex College (50-0) and Beechen Cliff School (51-5) posted notice that Filton are determined to get to Twickenham in April 2009.
Skipper and centre Jack Gadd has been in grand form behind the scrum where he has been well supported by a clever pair of half-backs in Adam and Steffan Jones and a dashing full-back in Harvey Skelton.
The Jones boys controlled possession and territory against Truro in an outstanding display to put to full advantage the work of Man of the Match, flanker Anthony Maka whose work at the breakdown was the highlight of the game.
At Denstone, wins over Ellesmere College, Denstone and Sherborne set up a final with the other group winners in Bryanston.
The game was effectively sealed by half-time when tries from centres Sheldon Stevens and the excellent Gadd and tournament top scorer wing Elliott Nightingale plus a conversion from Adam Jones set up a 17-0 lead.
The exhaustion of an energy sapping week then took its toll on the Filton boys and Bryanston rallied to pull it back to 17-15 in the last play of the day.
