Student Union Trips

One of the most popular things we do here in the Student Union is arrange trips for SGS College students. This year we have 4 residential trips; Amsterdam, Barcelona, New York and Paris! All SGS students are entitled to go on these, so keep checking back here for updates about the cost of these trips, when they are happening, and what you need to do.
We also arrange smaller one-day events like Alton Towers and London, so keep your eye out for information about those too. If you (or your parents) have any questions, concerns, or suggestions about the trips, please get in touch or come and see us.

As with any educational trip there is a duty of care, both morally and legally, entrusted to the party leaders, which we take very seriously. We also believe in treating the students in our care with the respect we hope they deserve and therefore allow them to make their own decisions about what to do with their time. With these two factors in mind, we will operate a system of daily ‘check-ins’ that give students the freedom to make the most of their time on the trips, and give us, the party leaders, the reassurance that you are safe and well.
If you are under 18 and your parents are concerned with the level of supervision on the trip then they are more than welcome to contact us so we can discuss this further. However it must be understood that for the majority of the time we are away, you will be unsupervised and you must ultimately take responsibility for your own safety and well being. Students will be given mobile contact details of all party leaders who will be on call 24 hours a day in case of any emergency.

All students will be required to sign a copy of the Code of Conduct for the trip. This details exactly what we will expect of you whilst we are away.
Please complete this form as soon as possible and return it to the Student Union office.

Trips FAQs:

  • How much do the trips cost?
It varies year to year, and depends on the duration of the trip. Come to see us in the SU office to find out.
  • How do I sign up for a trip?
You’ll need to come and pay a deposit, and bring your consent form (signed by a parent/guardian if you’re under 18). We also need your passport details, so please bring it in so we can take a copy. Make sure it is not about to expire!
  • Can I make my own way home from the ferryport/airport when we come back to the UK?
Yes but we must have prior consent from your parents if you are under 18. If you are over 18 please let us know if you plan to do this so we don’t have an unexpected empty seat on the coach.
  • Can I stay with a friend in that country?
Yes, with prior consent, as above.
  • Do we have to stay with the SU staff while on the trips?
It’s up to you. We’ll let you know what we plan to do each day, and you are welcome to come around with us if you like. But you are free to go and do your own thing if you prefer.
  • What are the sleeping arrangements?
Can I share a room with my friend? We aim to meet all rooming requests from students, however we may be limited by room sizes at the venues we stay at, and also we have to consider male/female ratios.
  • Can I bring a friend from outside college?
Our trips are for SGS College students only. However, if we have spaces left, we might sell one or two to non-students, but this is at our discretion and we’d like to meet them first. Priority must go to SGS College students.
  • What if I don’t know anyone else that’s going?
We will endeavour to introduce you to everyone else before the trip, and there is lots of time to get to know each other on the way. We will make sure you are not left alone.
  • What if I misbehave?
We’ll send you home. Simple as that.
