Filton College’s Bristol School of Art situated on Queens Road will open its doors to more learners from September 2010.

For many years the college has offered three opportunities for studying the Diploma in Foundation Studies (Art, Design and Media) course at Filton College: full-time at the WISE Campus; full-time at Queen’s Road; and part-time at Queen’s Road. From September 2010 the college will be amalgamating all three programmes and creating a Diploma in Foundation Studies Centre of Excellence at Queen’s Road in the heart of vibrant, cosmopolitan Clifton. This is the only centre in Bristol to offer the opportunity to study this prestigious course.

Queen’s Road was purpose built as an art college in 1858 and occupies part of the Royal West of England Academy. With its wide variety of specialist studios for life drawing, painting, printmaking, jewellery, enamelling, model making, sculpture and ceramics it remains a wonderful place to study art, design and media. In addition plans are also in place to create a specially equipped fashion/textiles studio and a second suite of Mac computers.

The Bristol School of Art has a strong relationship with the local community and the community within the South West. Students and staff take part in many community activities, including Doors Open Day, The Big Draw, local arts trails and exhibitions in local galleries including Centrespace, Paintworks, St John’s Crypt and RWA.

The centre also has an established reputation for enabling students to progress to routes in Higher Education. As part of Filton College, Queens Road, is an established and committed member of the Federation Partnership with UWE and colleges of Further Education in the South West. The Foundation Degree in Creative Practices offers an identified articulation route by which students may apply to ‘top up’ their qualification by studying at UWE for a further third year. As such the Bristol School of Art have a proven track record of supporting Foundation Diploma students to apply for Higher Education courses. The students that progress from Filton College have a history of progressing onto prestigious establishments that include Flamouth, Brighton, Goldsmiths, Centrals St. Martins and The London College of Fashion.

Dr Jo Kear, Head of Department at Queens Road comments: “2010-11 marks an exciting time of change for the students and staff of the Bristol School of Art, Queens Road. We are committed to building on our reputation for excellent Foundation delivery whilst expanding the number and variety of short adult courses we offer. We look forward to welcoming both new and existing students to study with us.”
